Glaucoma Awareness – The Importance of Regular Eye Checks
19th March 2019
As a manufacturer of ophthalmic instruments, we would like to bring to your attention how important it is to have regular eye checks. Particularly, when it comes to glaucoma, a field test could make a drastic difference for saving your vision, because any vision loss caused by glaucoma is irreversible.
Glaucoma is an eye disease, which is very hard to identify without the help of an ophthalmologist, optometrist, a slit lamp and an applanation tonometer (for measuring IOP). In most cases, glaucoma has no symptoms, therefore it is very important to detect in its early stages and start immediate treatment.
It affects the optic nerve and develops slowly, with the risk of progressing into acute vision loss and blindness. In the initial stages, people affected by glaucoma will gradually lose their peripheral vision, as if looking through a tunnel.
There are several factors which could cause glaucoma, such as having increased intraocular pressure in the anterior chamber, which may cause damage to your optic nerve. However, other factors can cause glaucoma to develop, such as diet, blood pressure, ethnicity and genetics.
It is extremely important to detect glaucoma in its early stages, to avoid partial sight loss and the only way to do so is to have regular eye checks.
